Crescendo marks Kelly Wearstler's tenth collaboration with The Rug Company, a milestone built on a decade of creative shorthand between two studios pushing pattern, material and technique further with each collection. Music is the throughline of the collection, though not any single tradition of it: the reference runs through hip-hop and rock as easily as it does through anything classical. What Wearstler kept returning to was the crescendo itself: the inflection point, the moment a piece of music stops holding still and starts building toward something. She wanted to see if a rug could hold that same tension. Not literal notation, just the physics of it: repetition that escalates, quiet giving way to volume, the same tension carried into thread instead of sound. That same logic shows up in the color palette. Each of the six designs—Arwen, Runa, Spire, Riven, Elowen, Crux—comes in two colorways, and the pairing is never arbitrary: one sits low, in warm neutrals and undyed nettle; the other pushes into higher contrast — moss and olive, pistachio green, ember and auburn. It's the same call-and-response built into the patterns themselves, just carried in a different register. The materials do their own work too: wool, silk, nettle and linen, hand-knotted by The Rug Company's artisans in Nepal, each catching light and holding a knot differently, so texture becomes another instrument in the arrangement.
Creative Process
Crescendo asked for something neither side had tried before. Instead of repeating a method that already worked, Wearstler and the weavers went looking for new ones — the range of pile heights and textures across the collection meant the details only revealed themselves once the weaving actually began. What followed was a genuine back-and-forth, conducted knot by knot with the artisans in Nepal, each side translating for the other until the vision matched what the loom could actually deliver. By the end, the education ran in both directions: she learned as much from the weavers as they learned from her.
Creative Direction
The campaign was shot on location at Villa Magnan, a neo-classical villa Kelly first encountered on a family trip and couldn't get out of her head. Its soaring ceilings, tall windows and weathered stone gave the collection exactly the backdrop it needed: a space where past and present sit in tension the same way structure and fluidity do throughout the rugs themselves. The villa's checkerboard floors found an unexpected match in Runa's tonal, trompe l'oeil squares, while the light moving through its windows let the collection's varied textures and pile heights reveal themselves differently across the day.
Throughout each stage of my design process, I draw inspiration from a variety of creative mediums, and music has always been a muse for me. Crescendo captures the dynamic energy of musical composition, transforming it into a tactile, artistic expression.
I wanted each design to feel like its own movement within the same piece of music: some quieter, some more percussive, but all of them speaking the same language of tension and release."
