A 1901 Beaux-Arts limestone townhouse just off Central Park was reimagined for a young family of avid art collectors and entertainers, balancing the building’s stately architectural heritage with a distinctly modern sensibility. A gut renovation restored its identity through a sophisticated interplay of eras and styles—from restrained original moldings, stained walnut, burnished brass, and Jean Prouvé–inspired architectural details to Chinese Art Deco, European midcentury masters, and contemporary art. At its heart, a new sculptural staircase creates a dramatic architectural gesture, punctuated by a vibrant 1940s Chinese Art Deco rug, Murano glass, and rare Franco Albini sconces, while a concealed walk-in bar beneath the landing transforms otherwise unused space for a family known to host dinners of twenty or more. The result is layered, highly considered, and sophisticated, yet ultimately warm and welcoming.
The kitchen’s patinated brass cabinetry, hood, and refrigerator give the subterranean space a warm glow, complemented by a marble-topped island, custom Snake barstools, opaline glass pendants, and a black-and-white checkerboard floor inspired by Viennese coffeehouses. An informal dining area pairs vintage Jacques Quinet chairs with a custom blackened brass and semiprecious stone table, while Nicolas Party ceramics, a vintage Brutalist-style credenza displaying the owner’s Sottsass teapot collection, and a sculptural Lindsey Adelman Studio chandelier add layers of art and character.
The primary suite entrance area is anchored by a rare (one of thirty) marble and gilt Del Diavolo mirror by Ettore Sottsass, circa 1980. It stands in opposition to small Knotty Bubble pendant lamps of mouth-blown glass with natural white rope by Lindsey Adelman Studio. In the primary bath, natural materials take on a glamorous expression through patinated brass, ribbed and luminescent glass, and vintage smoked-glass sconces etched with a wave motif.
