For this four-level Southern California coastal retreat, Wearstler draws from the surrounding landscape to create an imaginative modernist dialogue with the sea. A natural palette of sandstone, shell pink, rust, and moonstone gray unfolds against warm, honey-colored wood paneling, evoking the character of a classic sailing yacht. At the heart of the home, a monumental two-story, 17-foot carved ceramic fireplace by California artist Stan Bitters anchors the living room, while vintage pieces, including a 1960s Italian brass and gunmetal chandelier and Warren Platner chairs, bring moments of glamour to the otherwise organic, elemental palette.
Marine references appear throughout in unexpected forms, from vintage 1960s Italian mohair chairs reminiscent of birds on the sand to sculptural chrysanthemum root that recalls driftwood washed ashore.
