King Animal Hospital reimagines the veterinary environment through warmth, materiality, and a sense of care. Set across four stories just north of Toronto, the 60,000-square-foot facility serves patients ranging from small animals to horses, bringing advanced medical technology into an environment designed to feel welcoming rather than clinical. Inlaid stone, warm woods, plaster, and handcrafted details soften the architecture, creating a thoughtful balance between the practical demands of animal healthcare and the comfort of patients and their owners.
Beyond treatment, the hospital incorporates spaces for education, gathering, and community. An adaptable learning center pairs modular furnishings with concealed storage to accommodate different uses, while the staff dining area brings together custom banquettes, communal tables, and benches. In the dining loft, a 27-foot hand-carved table by Casey MacCafferty anchors the room alongside a ceramic horse by Emma Tate, artwork by Kate Tucker, and custom lamps by Kassandra Thatcher, extending the project’s emphasis on craft and the relationship between people and animals into the hospital’s shared spaces.
The hydrotherapy room balances function with a more architectural approach, using D-tiles, pilasters, and warm recessed lighting to create depth and rhythm around integrated storage.
