Set on the eighth floor of San Francisco Proper, Charmaine’s pairs a glass-enclosed lounge with an expansive terrace overlooking Nob Hill, SoMa, and City Hall. The building’s original copper cornice, weathered to a rich patina, connects the rooftop to the historic Beaux-Arts architecture below. In one sitting area, a Surrealist painting hangs against a black-and-white checkerboard tile fireplace, a motif with roots in the movement itself, bringing art and design into conversation against the panoramic city views.
Drawing from Viennese Secession, French industrial architecture, and San Francisco
itself, the interiors reference Jean Royère, Gio Ponti, Adolf Loos, and Gerrit Rietveld.
Distinct seating areas lend the lounge the intimacy and character of a modern-day
European salon.
French industrial influences emerge in metal columns painted the same shade of red as the Golden Gate Bridge and expansive metal-framed windows inspired by Pierre Chareau. One-of-a-kind vintage Scandinavian rugs spanning several eras mingle with custom wallpapers inspired by European prints and patterned upholstery, giving the space a sense of history and soul.
