Billow started with a vintage puffy jacket, or more specifically with the question a puffy jacket raises without meaning to: why can't a hard material behave like a soft one? Wearstler became fixated on contradiction — ceramic that reads as tactile and responsive, almost giving under a hand that never actually presses into it. The bulbous forms exist to play tricks with light and shadow, pushing a rigid material past what it's supposed to do and finding beauty in that defiance.

Creative Process

The tile comes in two builds — Smooth and Fluted, in 4x8 and 8x8 — designed to mix, match, and flip across all thirty-five of MADE's Stoneware glazes rather than commit to one fixed pattern. The real work happens in the glaze itself: reactive finishes that pool thick in the valleys of the pillowed surface and thin out over the peaks until the clay shows through, so no two tiles ever break exactly the same way. Every piece is still handcrafted by MADE's artisans in Portland, the same practice they've been refining for more than three decades.
